6. Prepare HT-S for remote update

6. Prepare HT-S for remote update

6.1. Preparing Spotter for updates

A few hours before the scheduled update, place the Spotter outside (keep it connected to the Smart Mooring and hydrophone) and turn it on. Make sure all 3 lights are solid green.

We recommend you fully charge the Spotter prior to this step, to ensure enough energy is available through the entire update process.

In this image, the SYSTEM light is GREEN while GO light is RED and SIGNAL light is off. This happens because the Spotter was indoors and could not properly fix a GPS signal. All three lights should be green when the Spotter is outdoors.

With this step completed, the blueOASIS team will issue some remote commands to prepare Spotter for the update. These commands may take up to a couple hours to be executed.

2. Connecting Borealis to the Internet

After completing Step 1, and getting confirmation from the blueOASIS team that the update commands have been issued and are be in-place, you may connect the hydrophone unit, Borealis, to the Internet.
Create a Wi-Fi network, with Internet access, with these settings:
  • Network Name: borealis
  • Password: borealis
You can set this up through a spare router, but the easiest way to is with a smartphone (Android, as iOS does not allow this kind of customization). In Settings>Connections there should be a way to create a Mobile Hotspot, as exemplified below.

After a few minutes of activating the hotspot, Borealis should connect to it automatically. In the example above, you can see that a unit called "borealis0026" is connected successfully.

If Borealis is not connecting, we suggest trying to turn off and then back on the mobile hotspot. Also, please ensure that Spotter is ON and that the phone/router is close the hydrophone unit.
Using a Mobile Hotspot may consume data from your mobile data plan. Please ensure that it is not an issue to consume some hundreds of MB for the update, since you may incurr costs by your carrier.

3. Remote Management Software Installation (Optional)

This step may not be required for your specific unit, as the software may be pre-installed. Please check with the blueOASIS team if that's your case before proceeding with it.

You can use the app we provided you for this purpose, which is available for Windows and Linux (macOS under testing). After completing Step 2, connect also your laptop to the same mobile hotspot, so that everything is under the same network. Don't change the default parameters in the tab 1. Connection.

Go to the 2. Devices tab. The device name should be on the format "borealisYYY", where YYY is the hydrophone unit ID. You can check this number either from the mobile hotspot in Step 2, or in the sticker on the side of your Borealis unit. Enter this name in the 'Add Device Manually' text section.
Alternatively, if you cannot find the name, try scanning for devices using the "Scan Borealis Hostnames" functionality, setting an adequate range of IDs to search for.
If successful, your device should be the only one listed under 'Devices to Configure.'
Finally, go to the 3. Tailscale tab and click on 'Install Tailscale on Selected Devices.'
Follow the pop-up prompts by clicking 'Yes.' The process may take a few minutes.
At the end, a window will display whether the installation succeeded or failed, followed by a pop-up with a link.
Please send this link to the blueOASIS team. It will provide remote access to the unit, to perform the update. Do not open the link, as it can make it invalid.

Afterwards, you can close the app.

4. Updating the unit

With Borealis connected to the internet, blueOASIS team can start to perform the update remotey. Please keep the mobile hotspot active all the time.

After the update is completed, the team will issue new commands to bring Spotter to a regular operation state and inform you.

We suggest performing a dry test of the system working outside after the process is completed. blueOASIS team will validate the system's operation before clearing its deployment.
